ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - GCSE
A recent GCSE English Language qualification at Grade D or Grade 3 or a recent Level 2 English Functional Skills qualification.
All students must take a GCSE English Language assessment which is required to find the right study level for each applicant. If you are unsuccessful in achieving a place on the GCSE English Language, you may be re-directed towards a Functional Skills English course.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
Before you enrol, we will make sure you are directed to the right level of course for you through an English assessment/interview. You should be able to state which skills you wish to improve, have clear goals you wish to achieve and be able to work independently.
If English is not your first language, you may need to complete ESOL qualifications before progressing onto these qualifications.
English Language is arguably the most important GCSE subject, being a necessary requirement for most Further and Higher Education courses, as well as a wide range of jobs.
What will I learn: How to analyse writers' use of language to convey their views, ideas and values. To do this you will engage with a range of fiction and non-fiction writing from the 19th to 21st century. You will also learn how to write in a range of styles for different audiences and purposes. This will include both imaginative and transactional writing.
Functional Skills English courses aim to build on your current skills and to focus on the skills needed to help you succeed in everyday work and social situations.
We offer Functional Skills English qualifications at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. You will study a range of topics to develop your knowledge and skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening.
Not required.
PROGRESSION - GCSE
GCSE English Language is an essential subject for progression to many other courses. Many universities and employers require that you have at least a grade 4 in this subject.
PROGRESSION - FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
On successful completion of the course you will receive a Functional Skills qualification in English at either Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2. You may then progress to the next level of English, to a GCSE course, or to other further education courses.
