Course Description

The field of personal training and the needs of modern day professional personal trainers is rapidly evolving in line with the broad ranging needs and goals of the clients they serve. As a result, the industry has never been more competitive. Highly successful personal trainers are results driven and confidently differentiate their services offered to provide an ethical service and sustain a highly successful business. Driving this success is a more scientific and evidence-based approach to programming, training, monitoring and managing clients which translates to better client retention as well as attracting new clients.

•Learners must hold a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (or equivalent).

•Learners must be able to apply factual and theoretical knowledge and be able to use a range of cognitive and practical skills to generate specific solutions for personal training clients. This will require learners to work in predictable and unpredictable situations using knowledge, skills and competencies pitched at level 4 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).

This course also entails a level 4 in strength and conditioning which covers:

•The role of a strength and conditioning coach as part of an athlete’s support team.

•Methods of carrying out performance-related needs analysis, measurements and assessments.

•Strategies to analyse and evaluate assessment findings in order to be able to develop and agree short-, medium- and long-term performance goals.

•Planning, delivering and evaluating periodic, performance-related strength and conditioning programmes

This course runs over 35 weeks on a Tuesday and Fridays, 9:30-4pm and 9-1:15pm.

Exact start dates during the Autumn term to be confirmed, however places fill quickly so early applications are encouraged.

Entry Requirements

Learners must hold a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (or equivalent).


Learners must complete the following which will be assessed both practically and theoretically. The ability to combine both is essential:

1. Applied techniques to support, enhance and manage the client journey

2. Progressing clients towards successful achievement of goals

Additionally learners will be working on two mandatory units which include:

1. Performance analysis of the activity and athlete

2. Plan, deliver and evaluate periodic performance-related strength

and conditioning programmes

Work Experience

There are work experience opportunities with our partners JD Gyms or David Lloyd Leisure Clubs.


This qualification provides progression on to:

Level 4 Certificate in Strength and Conditioning.

•Level 3 Award in Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance.

•Level 3 Award in Instructing Outdoor Fitness.

•Level 4 special-populations-related qualifications.

•Other level 3 and 4 technical qualifications in related subjects.

•Higher education (e.g. college or university) to study strength and conditioning at a higher level.

•A range of specialist strength and conditioning qualifications.

•Other level 4 and 5 qualifications in related sectors.

Learners may also progress onto qualifications in related sectors, e.g. Sports Massage, where they will be provided with the knowledge and skills to practise sports massage alongside personal training in a health club environment or in their own business.

Alternatively, learners may broaden their knowledge and skills by progressing onto qualifications mapping to additional branches of the Level 3 Standards, such as Exercise Referral and Leisure Management.
