BSc Top-Up in Health and Social Care - Level 6

Be part of the next generation of Health and Social Care Professionals, with our Level 6 BSc Degree in Health and Social Care you can train to make a differnce.

You'll be in safe hands as you learn from our industry experienced tutors, who between them, have decades of experience gathered in a variety of health and social care roles. You will also have access to digital resources and support from the digital team, allowing you to experience learning through virtual reality with the use of our advanced technology including our virtual anatomage table, which enables virtual dissection, as well as oculus headsets, and our interactive simulation doll, Juno.

This qualification has been tailored to meet the needs of local employers; modules have been developed and incorporated to support bridging the gap between local education centres and employers within the Health and Social Care Sectors. The college aims to continue to widen participation within the local area, supporting local students into education, providing opportunities for individuals from the community to contribute to their local Health and Social Care Sector employment shortage.

All of our lecturers have PGCEs and relevant degrees in this subject, including BSc in Health and Social Care, MSc in Psychology, BSc in Applied Psychology and Counselling, and other Social Work qualifications.

We work in partnership with a wide range of healthcare providers across the region who provide work placement opportunities for our students, enablling you to grow your professional portfolio.

Expect to learn about health and social care services, human biology, mental health awareness, safeguarding, public health, and much more. Every day promises to be truly rewarding as you gain the ability to flourish in the profession and change people’s lives.

This course is taught at our Middleton campus, located in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

Entry Requirements

  • English and Maths GCSE Grade 4 or above (or equivalent).
  • Completion of Foundation Degree (Level 4 and Level 5) or equivalent in relevant subject

  • Human Biology 1 - 20 Credit points (Level 4)
  • Mental Health Awareness - 20 Credit points (Level 4)
  • Health and Social Care Placement - 20 Credit points (Level 4)
  • Introduction to Safeguarding - 20 Credit Points (Level 4)
  • Introduction to Communication - 20 Credit points (Level 4)
  • Health and Social Care Placement 2 - 20 Credit points (Level 5)
  • Human Biology 2 - 20 Credit points (Level 5)
  • Public Health - 20 Credit points (Level 5)
  • Research and Social Inequalities - 20 Credit points (Level 5)
  • Decision Making in Health and Social Care - 20 Credit points (Level 5)

A process of a personal statement and interview to follow to ensure you are appropriate for the programme, subject to successful completion of a DBS check.

This course is validated by the Open University.

Below is a list of compulsory modules on this course (Level 6):

  • Ethics in Healthcare - 20 Credit points
  • Social Policy in Health Care - 20 Credit points
  • Mental Wellbeing and Psychological Therapy - 20 Credit points
  • Research Methods - 20 Credit points
  • Dissertation (6000 words) - 40 Credit points

Expected workload for each module:

  • 60 hours of face-to-face instruction
  • 140 hours of directed, independent, or simulation-based study

For the dissertation module, which is a 40-credit unit, the expected workload is:

  • 120 hours of face-to-face instruction
  • 280 hours of self-directed study and reading

Assessment methods will include essays and a reflective journal based on a therapeutic role play.

Level 6 Award: BSc in Health and Social Care

Course fees:

  • £6,1850 per year (full time)
  • £3,100 per year (part time)

Please note, part time will be 2 years (£6,200 total). Course fees are subject to the Refund and Fees Policy.

Learners will be encouraged to purchase relevant textbooks throghout the duration of their course.

Work Experience

Work placements will be completed during the Foundation Degree (Levels 4 and 5). Please note that there are no work placements included in the Level 6 BSc Top-Up.
