Apprenticeship Standard - Level 2 Bricklayer

Key responsibilities are likely to include; lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures eg chimney stacks. You might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects.

Bricklayers will work in large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations. A bricklayer may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group (gang) may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying gangs as well as other trades.

Entry Requirements

English and Maths GCSE's grades 2/D or above or equivalent. Individual employers may have their own higher entry requirements.

Details

On an apprenticeship programme, apprentices will learn and develop a range of knowledge, skills and behaviours. These include:

  • Understand Health and safety hazards, currentregulations and legislation including COSHH/risk assessments and understanding the importance of method statements
  • Understanding the principles of high quality customer service. Establishing the needs of others (colleagues, customers and other stakeholders)
  • Know the importance and considerations of thermal qualities, airtightness and ventilation to buildings
  • Interpret drawings and specifications. Measure the work area and set out level first courses of bricks to a plan, including bonds for openings and the damp course
  • Select appropriate tools, equipment and materials (e.g. trowel, levels, brick ties, DPC, insulation, mixers, lintels etc) for use when setting out and erecting masonry walling. Maintain a clean working environment
  • Select materials and resources to be able to set out and lay concrete, drainage and other substructure materials
  • Self motivated, positive can-do attitude, quality focused

End Point Assessment:

Apprentices without Level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this prior to taking the end-point 
assessment. The apprentice must complete all elements of the on programme learning to achieve the assessment gateway requirements. The EPA consists of 3 assessment methods:

  • Knowledge Test
  • Practical Skills Test
  • Oral Questioning
Work Experience

As part of the apprenticeship there is a dedicated off the job learning requirement. This is a minimum of 6 hours per week for the duration of the apprenticeship.

  • Teaching or learning the theory related to their roles
  • Coursework
Progression

On completion of this standard, apprentices can progress into a wide range of employment opportunities or further education.
