English and Maths GCSE's grades 2/D or above or equivalent. Individual employers may have their own higher entry requirements.
On an apprenticeship programme, apprentices will learn and develop a range of knowledge, skills and behaviours. These include:
- Understand Health and safety hazards, currentregulations and legislation including COSHH/risk assessments and understanding the importance of method statements
- Understanding the principles of high quality customer service. Establishing the needs of others (colleagues, customers and other stakeholders)
- Know the importance and considerations of thermal qualities, airtightness and ventilation to buildings
- Interpret drawings and specifications. Measure the work area and set out level first courses of bricks to a plan, including bonds for openings and the damp course
- Select appropriate tools, equipment and materials (e.g. trowel, levels, brick ties, DPC, insulation, mixers, lintels etc) for use when setting out and erecting masonry walling. Maintain a clean working environment
- Select materials and resources to be able to set out and lay concrete, drainage and other substructure materials
- Self motivated, positive can-do attitude, quality focused
End Point Assessment:
Apprentices without Level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this prior to taking the end-point
assessment. The apprentice must complete all elements of the on programme learning to achieve the assessment gateway requirements. The EPA consists of 3 assessment methods:
- Knowledge Test
- Practical Skills Test
- Oral Questioning
As part of the apprenticeship there is a dedicated off the job learning requirement. This is a minimum of 6 hours per week for the duration of the apprenticeship.

- Teaching or learning the theory related to their roles
- Coursework
On completion of this standard, apprentices can progress into a wide range of employment opportunities or further education.
