Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma - Computing & ICT

Access courses are designed for students who want a fast track route to university or to progress into careers and vocations that require higher level qualifications. Access courses have featured at Hopwood Hall for many years - changing the lives of many students. We're also proud to say that our achievement and success rates are amongst the best in the country.

There are eight 'pathways' on the Level 3 programme tailored to different career/ Higher Education areas. These include:

  • Art & Design

  • Business Professions

  • Computing & IT

  • Health and Caring Professions

  • Health Sciences

  • Humanities

  • Public Services and Allied Professions

  • Sport and Exercise

  • There are slightly different entry criteria for each pathway which reflects the requirements of differing Higher Education degree programmes. All pathways have mandatory units in Academic Essay Writing and Research Skills.

Please be aware that successful completion of an Access to HE Diploma does not guarantee a place at university.

Entry Requirements

Immediate entry to the one-year Level 3 Access to HE Diploma offers students who have already attained sufficient GCSE qualifications the quickest route to university. Usually this means students must have attained 4 GCSEs grade A-C/9-4, including English and Maths

The course is divided into 3 modules - Computing, Commercial Aspects and Maths; units include:

COMPUTING MODULE

Computer memory architecture

Computer systems architecture

Database principles and design

Event driven programming

ICT systems lifecycle

Networks and communication protocols

Principles of computer programming

Programming using objects

Structured programming

COMMERCIAL ASPECTS OF COMPUTING MODULE

Communities and sharing on the world wide web

Website design and development

Developing spreadsheet applications

MATHS FOR COMPUTING MODULE

Algorithms, pseudocode and trace tables

Computer logic

Number systems and data representation

The Access programme requires attendance for 14 hours per week over 34 weeks and is offered as a daytime course only.

Work Experience

There are no formal work experience requirements on this course.

Progression

The Access to HE Diploma offers students a way to gain the qualifications needed to enter Higher Education and gain a degree, helping them to enter their chosen career
