Animal Care - Level 2 Technical Certificate
If you’ve always dreamed about working with animals, then this course is perfect for you!
It’s taught at our Middleton Campus located in Greater Manchester. Under the guidance of expert tutors who have worked in zoos across the world, you’ll have the amazing opportunity to get hands-on experience with some of the planet’s most rare and wonderful wildlife.
We home over 700 animals, many of which are categorised as endangered species. Just some of the unique creatures you’ll learn about and care for include wallabies, alpacas, meerkats, potoroos and many more!
Every day has the potential to be an adventure. You’ll sometimes find yourself working indoors with exotic reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish, whereas on other days you’ll be in the great outdoors as you work from our vast animal enclosures. It’s here where you’ll also find our Tropical House.
This Level 2 qualification is ultimately designed to provide you with a range of practical skills and knowledge as you focus on a number of specialist topics that would give you could grounding to one day advance to university.
You’ll finish the course with a solid understanding from your experience working with animals and the exciting range of theory and practical work you will have undertaken. While your knowledge will be strong enough for you to enter the workforce after one year, you’ll also have the option to progress onto the Level 3 Certificate in Work Based Animal Care and continue with the next level of study.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade 3 and above, preferably to include English, Maths and Science

or a Level 1 qualification
Entrants who do not have a grade 4 or above in English and Maths will continue studying these at Hopwood Hall.

You'll study a wide range of units which are designed to give you the perfect foundation for a career working with animals.

Work Experience
You will have the amazing opportunity to undertake a work placement. This will take place one day per week and is often done on-site or with an external provider.
We're pleased to work alongside a number of reputable employers, as well as have the most contemporary on-campus facilities that replicate a true workplace environment.
Progression
The natural progression for this course is to advance onto the Level 3 Technical Certificate in Animal Care.
However, you will have numerous other options - including going into employment or doing an apprenticeship which would allow you to combine work and study.
Just some of the career routes that you could pursue following this qualification include zoology, microbiology, animal behaviour, veterinary nursing, wildlife conservation, obedience/agility training, dog grooming, rescue staff and many more.
