Skills for Life - Supported Internship

The Hopwood Hall College Supported Internship is a one-year programme for students with an EHCP (Educational Health and Care Plan). It is targeted for students whose goal is to gain employment in the community.

Our Supported Internship programme is designed to help learners develop the skills, confidence, and habits needed to thrive in a work environment. Learners are placed across three primary sites: Amazon, Milnrow or the Council offices at Number One Riverside.

This internship aims to bridge the gap between education and paid employment, helping students gain meaningful skills and confidence in a real-world setting.

How it works:

Following a 3-week induction, learners will meet each day for a tutorial and employability session for approximately one hour before starting work, and end the day with a debrief and a chance to refelct of the day's work. These employability skills sessions will focus on communication, personal presentation and professionalism, as well as specific technical skills for the work setting.

Skills and Qualities Developed:

  • Professionalism & Reliability - Learners build a strong work ethic by consistently following workplace rules and adhering to routines.
  • Readiness & Engagement - By attending daily employability sessions and actively participating, learners develop commitment and a positive attitude towards learning.
  • Personal Presentation & Hygiene - Understanding and applying appropriate grooming and dress standards help to build confidence and self-respect.
  • Effective Communication - Learners practice clear communication skills - essential for interacting with colleagues and supervisors.

This course is taught at our Middleton campus, located in Middleton, Greater Manchester.
