Certificate in Understanding Autism - Level 3
This qualification is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of autism. Successful completion of this qualification will allow learners to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of autism. This would support progression onto appropriate qualifications and assist with employment within the health and social care or education sectors.
Autism is described by The National Autistic Society as a complex, lifelong developmental disability that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person's social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. Individual preference regarding terminology used for an individual on the autism spectrum may vary and must be valued and respected.
The objectives of this qualification are to gain knowledge and understanding of autism, including:
- How to adopt a positive approach to supporting autistic individuals
- The current legislative framework relating to autistic individuals and how different theories have developed over time
- How to support and manage transitions for autistic individuals
- The range of therapeutic interventions and support available for autistic individuals and co-occurring conditions
- How to support communication and social interaction for autistic individuals
- How to develop an understanding of how autistic individuals may be vulnerable and the support worker’s role and responsibilities relating to safeguarding according to legislative requirements.

Entry Requirements
Learners will need to have completed the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism or have an equivalent qualification in Autism. It is also essential that the learner has L2 in English and feels competent with using IT.
Eligibility criteria for Flexible Learning courses:
- You must live in Greater Manchester
- Have lived in the UK for 3 years or more
- Be earning under £25,000 a year to qualify for funding

This course is made up of six units:
- Autism in context
- Positive Behavioural Support for Autistic individuals
- Understand support and management of transitions for Autistic individuals
- Therapeutic interventions and support available for Autistic individuals and co-occurring conditions
- Communication and social interaction with Autistic individuals
- Safeguarding and resilience in Autism

Attendance:
This course is delivered on a Flexible Learning basis. This means that your learning will be done away from your assessor through an on-line learning platform. All learning materials are interactive and online. You will be assigned a tutor who will be able to provide additional help and support if required.
Duration:
The Guided Learning Hours for this qualification are 189 hours. This is an estimate of the number of hours a learner will reasonably be likely to spend in preparation, study or assessment, which takes place as directed by – but not under the immediate guidance or supervision of a Tutor. This will vary depending on the speed of the learner, but it is expected most learners will complete within 16 weeks.
Work Experience
As this qualification is knowledge only, you do not need to be working or undertaking practical placements to take this qualification.
Progression
On completion of this qualification, you may enter the workforce at this level or continue to increase your knowledge and understanding by progressing onto a higher level qualification.
