Helping the borough’s most disadvantaged young people to thrive
Earlier this year we were delighted to be awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, the highest national honour in Higher and Further Education, in recognition of the positive impact made by our ground-breaking, trauma-informed approach to widening participation in education. This milestone moment in the college’s history fuelled our determination to continue to build on this momentum, creating a life-changing legacy for our most disadvantaged and marginalised learners.
We are committed to bringing out the best in each and every learner and are determined to do all that we can to continue to help transform the lives of our most disadvantaged young people and we need your help to do this.
Breaking down the structural barriers to educational achievement and social mobility so that no-one is left behind is central to our mission and will help build a future that is fairer and more inclusive for Rochdale’s next generation.
Demand for our college support services continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. Increasing numbers of learners are presenting with complex issues which act as a barrier to entering, staying in, and progressing from education, limiting our learners’ subsequent life chances and opportunities.
The issues our young people face often come from experiencing challenging home circumstances and multiple adverse childhood experiences. We have also seen significant increases in the number of safeguarded and looked after children and of learners experiencing mental health crisis.
To ensure these learners can access education and can truly thrive at the college, we committed to adopting a college-wide trauma-informed approach and this has proven to be life-changing for a significant number of our most anxious, vulnerable learners.
Our trauma-informed approach has had an extremely positive impact, particularly with marginalised young people with increasing numbers of young people going to college.
This is evident in college destination figures, which show 57.2% of young people in the borough going to a further education college in 2022, up from 47.9% in 2020. In addition, Looked After Children – a group that traditionally underperforms in education – achieved 2% above the general college cohort in 2021/22.)
Inspired by the impact this work has had, we are launching the Hopwood Corporate Supporter Scheme and asking businesses like yours to become the inaugural supporters.
We want to encourage companies who share our passion and our values to join us in our mission to be a force for good and a catalyst for social change, helping us to make an even greater impact on those that most need our help.
A great way to publicly lend your support and meet your company’s Corporate Social Responsibility aspirations
With your support we can continue to widen participation in further education from the most marginalised and disadvantaged young people who would otherwise be at risk of being left behind. This is your opportunity to help us to break down the barriers to success and change the narrative.
By working together we can empower Rochdale’s most disadvantaged young people to overcome adversity and remove the barriers to opportunity, fuelling aspirations and boosting social mobility, increasing life chances, and truly transforming lives.
With the support of businesses that share our commitment to changing young lives, we are determined to continue our transformative work. By broadening life experiences and investing in developing cultural capital we can collectively make a huge difference.
Broadening life experiences and boosting cultural capital, building self-confidence and self-belief, developing resilience and good mental health and wellbeing
Providing extraordinary enrichment and life experiences for all, not just for those whose parents can afford it, is crucial to our plans. We are determined to ensure that all students from disadvantaged areas develop cultural capital through life-changing experiences.
With your support we aim to be able to open up our most disadvantaged learners to experiences which will help to develop their confidence and boost that all important cultural capital which will empower our learners, raising aspirations, fuelling ambition and galvanising their success.
Corporate Supporter funding would allow us to expand the motivational life experiences we provide access to so that all disadvantaged learners have the opportunity to experience:
Theatre visits, visits to cultural landmarks, Museum and art gallery visits, a chance to dine in a restaurant or attend a Premiership football match, attend a concert, explore scenic rural locations, to access sport experiences such as ski-ing lessons, dance lessons or to access travel experiences; international trips to experience other cultures and more.
We also plan to build on our successful pilot of social prescribing to support good mental health and wellbeing through a dedicated social prescribing link worker.
