Entry Requirements

English and Maths GCSEs at Grades 2/E and above or equivalent are essential.

Individual employers may have their own higher entry requirements.

The Construction Plant Operative apprenticeship is a Level 2 programme designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to operate construction plant equipment safely and efficiently on site.

You’ll gain experience operating various plant machinery such as excavators, dumpers, rollers, and forklifts - all while learning how to work to industry safety and environmental standards.

Whether you're supporting housing developments, roadworks, or major infrastructure projects, this apprenticeship is your gateway to a rewarding career in the construction sector.

What you'll learn and do:

  • Operate construction plant equipment - safely and competently operate a range of plant machinery used in construction, such as forward tipping dumpers, ride-on rollers, forklifts, and 360 excavators.
  • Carry out pre-use checks and maintenance - develop skills in inspecting machinery before use, reporting defects, and completing routine maintenance.
  • Understand site requirements - learn to follow site instructions, traffic management plans, and work in coordination with other workers to ensure safety and productivity.
  • Customer service and communication - follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), maual handling, and risk assessments.

End Point Assessment:

Your skills will be tested through:

  • A multiple-choice test on plant operations and safety.
  • Observation with questions during live operations.
  • A professional discussion based on a portfolio of evidence.

Successful completion can earn you a pass, merit, or distinction grade, setting you up for a bright future in the construction industry.

Duration/Lengths:

  • Typically, 15 months (prior experience, or relevant qualifications may be recognised and potentially shorten the duration of this apprenticeship).
Work Experience

As part of the apprenticeship there is a dedicated off the job learning requirement. This is a minimum of 6 hours per week for the duration of the apprenticeship. This could include:

Role Development:

  • Observing colleagues
  • Receiving mentoring
  • Shadowing
  • Training

Programme Development:

  • Teaching or learning the theory related to their roles
  • Coursework
