Apprenticeship Standard - Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician

Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Being tidy and respectfull are important qualities as they can often find hemselves working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites.

Plumbing and Heating Technicians are at the forefront of installing new and exciting environmental technologies i.e: heat pumps, solar thermal systems, biomass boilers and water recycling systems. It’s important for a plumbing and heating technician to be able to work independently or as a team and use their knowledge and skills to ensure that both the system and appliances are appropriately selected and correctly installed, often without any supervision, and done so in a safe, efficient and economical manner to minimise waste.

Entry Requirements

English and Maths GCSEs Grades 4/C or above or equivalent. Individual employers may have their own higher entry requirements.

Details

On an apprenticeship programme, apprentices will learn and develop a range of knowledge, skills and behaviours. These include:

  • Understand the principles of selection, installation, testing, commissioning and service and maintenance
  • techniques on solar thermal, heat pumps and water recycling systems
  • Understand the principles of fuel combustion, ventilation and fluing arrangements within a domestic environment
  • Understand the principles of high quality customer service and establishing the needs of others (colleagues, customers and other stakeholders)
  • Select, install, test, commission, service and maintain solar thermal, heat pumps and water recycling systems
  • Operate in a safe working manner by adhering to health and safety legislation, codes of practice and applying safe working practices
  • Demonstrate drive and energy in fulfilling requirements of role
  • Takes responsibility
  • Honesty and integrity
  • Quality focused

End Point Assessment:

Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this prior to taking the end-point assessment. The apprentice must complete all elements of the on programme learning to achieve the assessment gateway requirements. The EPA consists of 5 assessment methods:

  • Knowledge Test
  • Design Project
  • Practical Installation Test
  • Practical Application Test
  • Professional Discussion
     
Work Experience

As part of the apprenticeship there is a dedicated off the job learning requirement. This is a minimum of 6 hours per week for the duration of the apprenticeship. This could include:

Role Development:

  • Observing colleagues
  • Receiving mentoring
  • Shadowing
  • Training

Programme Development:

  • Teaching or learning the theory related to their roles
  • Coursework
Progression

On completion of this standard, apprentices can progress into a wide range of employment opportunities or further education.
