Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the general requirements of BS 5839-1.
  2. Understand the design considerations for fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings.
  3. Understand the requirements in relation to the responsibility for the limitation of false alarms and unwanted fire alarm signals.
  4. Understand the requirements of BS 5839-1 in relation to the installation of fire detection and fire alarm systems.
  5. Understand the requirements of BS 5839-1 in relation to the commissioning and handover of fire detection and fire alarm systems.
  6. Understand the requirements of BS 5839-1 in relation to the maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems.
  7. Understand the requirements of BS 5839-1 in relation to the user’s responsibilities for fire detection and fire alarm systems.
  8. Understand the information contained within the annexes of BS 5839-1.

  • Apprenticeship Pathways – learners who’ve done BS 5839-1:2025 as CPD might align it with their Level 3 FESS Technician apprenticeship (ticks off knowledge requirements).

  • Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) / IFE Membership – technical award supports progression to recognised professional registration.

  • Supervisory/Managerial Development – stepping into project supervisor, QS, compliance officer, or contracts manager roles where understanding BS 5839-1 is a must
