Colleges stars shine bright at Student Awards 2026

Hopwood Hall College celebrated another year of outstanding achievements when it held its annual Student Awards 2026.

The glitzy ceremony saw young people enjoy a well-deserved moment in the spotlight while friends and family watched on at Middleton Arena.

Principal and CEO, Julia Heap OBE, alongside Deputy Principal, Greg Scully, led the festivities by presenting prizes to individuals from across the college community.

The biggest award of the evening, the coveted Gold Star Award, went to Hair and Beauty student Maisie Kelbie.

Maisie was praised for her strong work ethic as she took to the stage to collect her trophy as well as a special prize from the sponsor, Reed.

Meanwhile, Applied Science student Taoheed Olamide Lawal picked up the Silver Star Award.

Taoheed was recognised for his work as a student governor, in addition to the ‘intellectual curiosity’ he’d demonstrated while studying Science.

Animal Nursing learner Amelia Salt picked up the Bronze Star Award.

The former Cardinal Langley RC High School pupil was nominated for being career-focused and securing employment at a veterinary clinic.

Finally, the T Level Star Award went to Danny McHedlidze, who had excelled while studying Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction.

The event was backed by several sponsors and supporters, including Reed, Bluestorm, the Queen Elizabeth Foundation, Russums, Dennis Williams and CEF Middleton.

Hopwood alumnus Graham Dinn, who began his accomplished career in the borough and is now a patron for those studying Health and Social Care, was also in attendance to present prizes.

The evening began with Rochdale Music Service playing for guests as they arrived before the ceremony started in style with Lareena Mitchell, who found fame on The Voice, taking to the stage to sing.

Lareena’s powerful performance was followed by guest speaker Stevan Parkin, whose impactful speech discussed his journey to becoming the founder and CEO of MiniVox.
