Course Description

This is a very practical course covering all basic construction repair and maintenance. Ideal for those looking for a career in construction or building maintenance/management. Our qualifications are aimed at people wishing to become experts in their chosen trade. You can also progress through an apprenticeship route after you have completed this course.

Learners will be taught in our state of the art bespoke workshops and classrooms by industry experienced tutors. You can also look to specialise in an area following the completion of this course by enrolling on one of our construction programmes such as carpentry and joinery, brickwork and more.

No formal qualifications. Functional Skills in English and Maths will be taught alongside the course.

Details

The Level 1 qualification provides an introduction into the area of building maintenance and construction, covering basic principles through a mixture of practical work and classroom work. The practical work develops the hands-on skills needed for the trade, classroom work develops the knowledge needed to succeed in the trade.

Maths is a crucial part of the construction trade and is therefore embedded into the course.

Topics on this course include:

  • Painting and decorating trade repairs plastering trade repairs
  • Brickwork trade repairs
  • Carpentry and Joinery trade repairs
  • Tiling trade repairs
  • Plumbing
  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Developing customer relationships

Students will also attend tutorial sessions on a weekly basis where topics to develop employability skills will be covered.

Work Experience

There is no specific work experience required or undertaken for this course however there is a strong practical element. Learners are pushed to develop their practical skills and enter into the skills competitions we run with other colleges to help them stand out from the crowd.

Progression

Following the completion of this course, students are able to progress onto either the Level 2 Diploma in building maintenance or apprenticeship routes. Possible careers include: Building maintenance, manager or site foreman. Specialist trades e.g. plumber, heating engineer, bathroom fitter with further training.
