Course Description

This course is designed for anybody going into, or already working within the security industry. During this course learners will gain knowledge and understanding of how alarms are installed and how they work in different environments. The course also covers different types of equipment and practical skills such as fault identifying and fixing.

This course is for learners looking to pursue a career in electrical installation and security alarms and learners who enjoy working in practical roles that offer challenge and variety. All levels of this course include a wide range of activities and you will learn skills that are associated with industrial installations, inspection and testing, fault finding and diagnosis. Our qualifications are aimed at people wishing to become experts in

their chosen trade. Learners will be taught in our state of the art bespoke workshops and classrooms by industry experienced tutors.

This course is 2.5 days per week, 50/50 theory and practical plus one hour of tutorial.


Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation

Entry Requirements

Due to the level of Maths and Science on this level 2 course, the entry requirements are GCSE grade C/4 and above in Maths, English and Science. Entrants with grade Ds/3s will be considered subject to initial assessment and diagnostics. All students are required to achieve GCSE grade C/4 in Maths and English.

If the required grade is not reached there are opportunities to study these subjects at college alongside the course to help achieve it. This is a government requirement but also needed by many employers for a number of careers.


The Level 2 qualification teaches learners about the area of electrical installation and security alarms through a mixture of practical work and classroom work. The practical work teaches the hands-on skills needed for the trade, classroom work teaches the knowledge needed for the trade.

There is a challenging level of Maths and Physics embedded into this course as it is crucial to this industry.

Topics on this course include:

  • Health and safety
  • Electrical science
  • Installation theory
  • Communication in building services engineering
  • Practical examination

Students will also attend tutorial sessions on a weekly basis where topics to develop employability skills will be covered.

Work Experience

There is no specific work experience required to pass this course however there is a strong practical element. As the course is only 2.5 days a week students are encouraged to take up part time work alongside the course to develop their skills. Learners are pushed to develop their practical skills and knowledge to enter into the skills competitions we run with other colleges to help them stand out from the crowd.


Upon completion of this course, students can progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation or the National Diploma in Electronic Engineering, or, alternatively apprenticeship routes. Possible careers include: Installation electrician, maintenance electrician, service engineering, testing engineer, electrical engineer or sales engineer.
