Course Description

Access courses are designed for students who want a fast-track route to university or to progress into careers and vocations that require higher level qualifications. Access courses have featured at Hopwood Hall for many years – changing the lives of many students. We’re also proud to say that our achievement and success rates are amongst the best in the country.

The Health Science Diploma offers a recognised and accredited route into Higher Education and training in a variety of health-related professions, including Midwifery, Podiatry, Chiropody, Radiography, Paramedics, Dental Nursing, Physiotherapy and Operations Department Practice.

Please be aware that successful completion of an Access to HE Diploma does not guarantee a place at university. For many health-related courses your application will be strengthened if you have relevant paid or voluntary work experience.

Entry Requirements

Immediate entry to our one-year Level 3 Access to HE Diplomas - offering the quickest route to university - is open to students who have already attained sufficient GCSE qualifications.
In most cases, this means students will have attained GCSE at grades A-C/9-4 (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
Please note, our entry criteria may be higher than this, depending on your intended progression after your Access course.
For instance, some health degrees, such as paramedicine, require students to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at A-C/9-4, including Science. This may also be true for some humanities degrees, such as degrees in teaching. This will be discussed at interview.

The Access programme is a 60 credit Diploma. The awarding body is Open Awards. It requires attendance for 14 hours a week over 34 weeks. Study is during the daytime, at Middleton Campus.
On the Access to Health Science Diploma you will study the following core subject modules:
Health Science
Health Care Studies
Assessment on the course is by continual assessment, rather than end-of-year exams.

In addition to your three core subject modules, you will have a tutorial session with a personal tutor, who will assist you with your university application.
