Applied Science - Level 2 Diploma

At Hopwood Hall College we believe that science has something to offer every student, and that everyone needs some level of relevant scientific understanding. That's why 'Science at Hopwood' has developed a suite of qualifications at Level 2 which facilitates the transition to BTEC Level 3 Applied Science Foundation and Extended Diploma. Students of all abilities and all aspirations, can realise their full potential and progress to Higher Education or scientific apprenticeships. The content has been divided into two main sections, which contain connections between areas of biology, physics and chemistry that sit together as part of good science.

Details

From the start of the course you will work towards AQA, GCSE Combined Science: Synergy, whilst studying GCSE Maths and English (currently Linear, Edexcel). Theory based lessons and practical investigations are an integral part of the study programme. The remainder of the programme is dedicated to developing your skills, knowledge and building your confidence in different scientific disciplines, digital media and interpersonal skills in preparation for the level 3 science route. Topics on this course include: Life and environmental sciences Building blocks: from atoms to cells, behaviour and transport on the small scale. Transport over larger distances: systems in animals and plants and how these systems interact. Interactions with the environment: the effects of factors in the environment on organisms, how our choices affect our health. Explaining change: how organisms, species, living and non-living systems change over time. Physical sciences Building blocks for understanding: organising, patterns, properties and analysis. Interactions over small and large distances: strong and weak forces between atoms, molecules and larger structures and how they interact. Movement and interactions: rates of change of motion and direction of large and small objects, and chemical changes. Guiding Spaceship Earth towards a sustainable future: resources of materials and energy. In addition to this you will receive 1 hour per week of learning ‘Transition to Level 3 Science’, which will encompass both theory based sessions and practical investigations. This will help to prepare you for the transition between GCSE and BTEC Level 3 Applied Science.

Work Experience
There is no specific work experience required or undertaken for this course. However, students gain the skills and knowledge needed to study further and for future employment.
Progression
Upon completion of this course students are able to progress onto the Level 3 Applied Science course or any other Level 3 course that requires GCSE grade 4 in English, Maths and Science. Once the level 3 qualification is obtained students are able to progress onto Higher Education or specific scientific apprenticeships.
