By 2023 the government plans to have three separate routes of study within further education, consisting of A-Levels, T-Levels and apprenticeships.
T-Levels are being introduced at a handful of colleges from 2020 and will then be rolled out within selected colleges across the UK. Hopwood Hall will be introducing T-levels from September 2021.
What are T-Levels?
T-Levels are two-year, full time Level 3 courses and are an ideal course if you have finished your GCSEs and want the knowledge and experience to get straight into employment, an apprenticeship or higher education.
They contain a range of components including: employability skills, numeracy, literacy and digital skills, concepts and theories, and occupational specialisms.
As part of the full programme of study, learners complete a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) in an industry placement, focused on developing practical and technical skills. The placement will be with an employer in a real life working environment. You’ll spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on industry placement.
When are T-Levels being introduced at Hopwood Hall College?
Hopwood Hall College been chosen to deliver T-Levels with learners in 2021. Initially, T-Levels will launch across three different curriculum areas:
- Digital Support
- Digital Production Design and Development
- Building Services Engineering,
- Design, Surveying and Planning
Health and Science:
- Healthcare Science
- Science: Laboratory Science
These will be followed by additional T-Level pathways in 2022 and 2023.
Why should I apply for a T-Level?
T-levels have been designed with leading businesses and employers to give you the knowledge and skills you need. They give you the chance to learn what a real career is like while you continue your studies.
Successful completion of a T-level will provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviour necessary to start skilled employment or progress to higher levels of study, including apprenticeships and a wide range of degree programmes.
Your T-level will be worth UCAS points (for example a T-level Distinction* is worth the same as 3 A-levels at A*), and it and will be recognised by universities and other education providers so you can choose to continue studying after successfully completing your T-level if you wish.
If you’re approaching the end of your GCSEs and are thinking about your next steps, completing a T-level course is a great way to progress into a skilled job. As T-levels are developed with employers, they allow you to develop the appropriate skills your chosen industry requires.
High quality industry placements are an integral part of the new T-Level programme. Industry placements are crucially important in enabling young people to gain the valuable skills that they need to progress onto employment.
Industry placements should be a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days). Placements can be undertaken as a block, over college holidays for example, or as individual days. This arrangement depends on what works best for the student and employer.
Industry placements give students an opportunity to develop their practical and technical skills in a role directly relevant to their vocational course. They also give employers the chance to ensure that young people are developing the skills and experience that industry needs.

Information for employers
As part of a T-level programme, students will need to complete an industry placement. These students will arrive work ready and will be expected to complete 45 days of work experience covering 315 hours.
The industry placement can be completed one day a week throughout the academic year and/or as a block over college holidays. We work closely with you to arrange a structure to meet your needs.
We recognise the vital role employers play in developing the workforce and delivering outstanding practice. Collaborating through industry placement will provide the correct calibre of students to enhance any workforce.
