Learning Support Officer
To be fully committed to team working to drive an inclusive strategy across college.
To be the key point of contact between Learning Support and Programme Areas for learners with additional learning needs through shared planning, expertise and knowledge of SEND, Education Health and Care and High Needs planning and support.
To provide high quality innovative and holistic support provision for learners with SEND, EHCPs and High Needs in line with the SEND Code of Practice 2014 and other Legislation related to SEND.
To promote independence, achievement and progression for learners within the SEND four areas of need (Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, Social Emotional and Mental Health, Sensory and Physical Needs) and Preparing for Adulthood.
To have a key role in the effective and inclusive approach and implementation of the Person-Centred Review process, liaising with learners with SEND and EHCP, parent/carers and curriculum teams, and relevant external agencies.
- Close and effective liaison between the Learning Support Team and Programme Area/s and course tutors regarding learners with additional needs, EHCP and High Needs. Attendance to weekly curriculum team meetings to discuss current learners and new learners transitioning to college.
- Provide high quality support for learners with SEND, EHCP and High Needs in and out of class including trips, visits and residentials.
- Provide out of class support for identified learners with SEMH needs, developing and implementing strategies and resources to support social, emotional and study skills.
- Develop and set SMART targets with learners and their Tutors to track the progress being by learners working towards EHCP Outcomes and Preparing for Adulthood.
- Monitor the quality and implementation of SMART Targets for supported learners by Learning Support Assistants for Programme Area/s of responsibility, providing required mentoring and training to improve performance and quality support for learners.
- Close liaison and meetings with schools and all relevant external agencies to gather and record information for potential new learners including risk assessments to accurately assess the needs of young people with SEND and High Needs, plan transition and progression routes aligned to EHCP and Code of Practice 2014.
- Work closely with the Learning Support Manager and Learning Support Coordinators to review support for learners based on assessment evidence, the EHCP and High Needs Funding, to put a staffing plan in place to meet individual needs within the curriculum area/s.
- Close liaison with internal and external services (e.g. RANS and Health Services) for learners with SEND, including learners with Hearing/Visual Impairments, medical conditions and disabilities to ensure the required health and personal care plans, PEEPs, Exam Access Arrangements and required specialist equipment and software is in place.
- Work collaboratively with Programme Areas and Tutors to implement efficient and effective timetabling of required support for learners, maximising support for learners with additional learning needs, SEND and EHCP to ensure learners who require access to additional support are not disadvantaged.
- Provide advice, guidance and mentoring to the Learning Support Assistants working within the Programme Area/s of responsibility, mentoring staff and providing timely feedback to the Learning Support Coordinators regarding meeting objectives of the LSA role and Team KPIs, identifying performance and training needs.
- Be a key advisory for potential new learners with SEND, EHCP and complex high needs in close liaison with the Learning Support Coordinators and Learning Support Manager.
- Provide the required support and guidance to learners with SEND and EHCP progressing to HE programmes and study, supporting learners in the process required to apply for Disabled Student Allowance.
- Communicate potential barriers and required reasonable adjustments to Curriculum Teams to inform and advise teaching and learning, and required support. Liaise with Tutors and Support Staff to ensure student progress towards Targets and Outcomes is tracked, monitored and available for review
- Maintain and develop knowledge and understanding relating to SEND, Preparing for Adulthood and EHCP Outcomes, develop and implement key training requirements and CPD briefing sessions for support staff, curriculum and service areas.
- Key responsibilities for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of learners with additional learning needs and vulnerable adults. Referral to relevant key services e.g. Adult Social Care Services.
- Contribute to the IAG for learners with additional needs, with teaching and support staff across college for transition purposes, Education Health and Care planning and High Needs.
- Attend College Open Days, Transition and School events as required.
- To engage in continuous professional development.
- Any other duties of a similar level of responsibility as may be required.
