Sultan is married with five children, who were all born and schooled in Rochdale. He also attended schools and college in Rochdale prior to starting work with the Inland Revenue in 1977. In 1988 he enrolled at Huddersfield Polytechnic to train to be a Probation Officer and completed the course in 1990. Sultan was elected as a Local Councillor for a ward in Rochdale in 1996. As a member of Rochdale Council he served on several committees including the Education Committee and was a Local Education Authority nominated school governor on primary and secondary schools for eight years. Sultan’s political career resulted in him becoming the Mayor of Rochdale in May 2003 until June 2004.
Sultan says: “The staff and students of Hopwood Hall were supportive to me when I was the Mayor and they helped to raise large sums of money for my charities by participating in various sporting activities. I feel that I have something to offer the college and hope to repay the establishment with my experience and knowledge.”
